Anthony Nak Benefit

So I had a kindof crazy thing happened this week. I was looking at JJ Plasencio's website (http://www.j2music.com/) as I hadn't been there in a while and noticed he was playing around town with a few local musicians. One of those being Buddy Quaid (http://www.buddyquaid.com), yes, Dennis and Randy Quaid's brother - or 1/2 brother or something. So I wandered over to Buddy Quaids site to listen to some of his music and signed up on his mailing list to find out where he's playing around town and whatnot. So, then Buddy emails his mailing list to see if anyone wants to come to an Anthony Nak benefit he was playing at. I figured I'd have no chance at him picking me but emailed him anyway to say I'd be interested. He emails back and says I can come but gave me like no details. I later figure out the details (band boys are usually pretty bad at details so I've gotten used to that). I'd actually never heard of Anthony Nak but found out they are way high end jewelry designers that design some of the fancy stuff you see the stars at the ocsars and stuff wearing. Really cool and pretty stuff. I was way impressed. So I figured this was a fancy event and Buddy said to "dress like I know how" -- so I got all spiffy in my suit that I think I look like Hew Hefner in but everyone else seems to like it. And my friend Lainie was able to come on short notice so off we went to the benefit (I am not even quite sure what the benefit was for). We get there and the door person checked to make sure we were on "the list" -- whoa - I've never been to a party where you had to be "on the list." Cool. So we got in and looked at the jewerly and walked into the area where the benefit would be. Very fancy. Had a few cocktail tables set up around the room and really cool floral arrangements with orchids and other exotic flowers - and people with hor'dorves on platters walking around asking if you'd like to try some smoked salmon, or shrimp on a cucumber or chicken on a stick or whatnot. Whoa. And they had really good chocolate from SXUL chocolate made right here in Austin. The guy serving that enjoyed telling us the name many times. I tried not to giggle. I tried most everything except the stuff that looked like a frog on a stick. We later found out it was quail. Then we saw the band guys in their jeans and t-shirts (why is it that cool boys can pull that off at a fancy event?). So we talked to them briefly and then they played an hour or so set. Very pop/rock. Good stuff. A little like John Mayer or something. Buddy has great teeth so thats always fun. ha-ha. Lainie was the one that pointed out his teeth. Anyway after they played I talked briefly with them again then Buddy ran off to find his girlfriend (who we met later - seemed like a nice girl), JJ ran off to pack (he had a gig playing with Kim Hill the next day - I wasn't going to tell him how uncool that was - I mean really - the former bassist of Sixpense and Plumb (two of the best bands ever) playing for Kim Hill! yikes. Oh well) then the upright bassist, kyle, decided to hang with Lainie and I the rest of the evening. So that was fun meeting someone new. Its always good to practice speaking with a boy - as I live in a pretty sheltered Live Oak Church world where there aren't many boys to practice speaking with. ha-ha. So Kyle kept indroducing me as Marsha - we finially corrected him later in the evening. Then we started noticing people were wearing the "pieces" - Anthony Nak pieces ofcourse. That was way cool seeing them of actually people. I was surprised how many girls could pull off the jeans and a sparkly fancy shirt and high heel look. I would have looked like a weeble wooble in that kind of outfit. Anyway. Was a really fun evening. Oh - and we saw Luke Wilson there. I think he's the best looking Wilson brother. And I think Buddy is the best looking Quaid brother. So there you have it. Check out Buddy's music sometime, he plays at the Red Fez a bunch. And if you are wealthy enough - check out the Anthony Nak store too - its down on 8th and Brazos. :0)

Birthday Celebrations

So I had a wonderful birthday weekend last weekend. My mom came in last thursday for my bday and stayed til yesterday. I had an absolutely wonderful time with her, wish she lived closer. We went out to many of the cool austin places to dine, chuy's, Juan in a Million, Rudys, etc.. Saturday a few of us went to the melting pot. That was really fun. I love dipping. I could have eaten chocolate fondue all night. yum. Sunday evening I had a little bigger bday celebration over at the Kobes. There was a bunch of adults and a ton of kids - none older than 4. :0) Mom and I had made about 60 cupcakes for the celebration with pink and purple sprinkles and everything! Those were grande indeed. It was a loosely Strawberry Shortcake themed party and Jeff docorated with Strawberry Shortcake balloons and lots of pink streamers. Was way fun. Then tuesday I went in for hand surgery. I had a 7am surgery appointment so I had to get there at 6 am. They put my IV's in, rolled me into the operating room and I promptly fell asleep before I even had any meds! I woke up in recovery kindof out of it and slept most of the day. Mom made me apple pancakes which were very yummy. And we watched a movie. So overall it was a good birthday weekend, the surgery went fine, and mom made it back to Virginia yesterday sucessfully. Good stuff.
