“Oh, motherhood! which our
opposers say is woman’s holiest mission. We cannot have true mothers without having true womanhood first. Let us see that our daughters are developed into true women, and the office of maternity will take care of itself. Remove woman’s shackles and she will soon create a public opinion that will declare it a disgrace for a man to outrage the woman he has sworn to protect. Then, and not till then, will man’s shackles fall, for noble manhood must be the legitimate fruit of free and exalted womanhood. Brothers, ’
tis for you, as well as ourselves we plead. Will you neglect so great a salvation?” – Mattie
Brinkerhoff (from an article “Woman and Motherhood” published in The Revolution a suffragist newspaper in 1869)
I have never considered myself much of a feminist. Maybe its growing up in the conservative protestant church where I was taught the word “feminist” was bad or something. But as I've gotten older, had roommates that tilted towards or were feminists, studied what the Bible really says, and read more about it. I can say that although I don't walk around and call myself a feminist, I
definitely believe that women have a voice and that voice should be listened to and ideas considered. Lately I've been reading articles and ideas off the "feminists for life" website (
http://www.feministsforlife.com) . Its got some interesting stuff on it. Well, back to my womanly duties of cleaning the house. :0)
